ZOMM Loves Female Innovators

As many know, ZOMM was invented by Laurie Penix, the mom of the Penix family. Laurie recalls being on the treadmill, watching Oprah, when a phone call from a girlfriend inspired her to look further into the idea of a wireless leash. Inspired by Laurie’s innovation, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to find some of the other top mompreneurs to share with – and hopefully inspire – everyone.

Heather Armstrong – dooce.com

Easily one of the most popular blogs out there for moms and non-moms alike, the readership for dooce.com is in the millions. Since Heather’s blog started garnering more attention, she’s launched two books, landed an advertising partnership with Dove Beauty and a blogging deal with HGTV. She was also named the 26th most influential women in the media by Forbes.

Julie Aigner-Clark – Baby Einstein

Julie produced the first Baby Einstein video in her family’s home basement— with her own funding. After meeting with a tradeshow buyer in New York, Baby Einstein was an instant success story. More recently, Julie sold Baby Einstein to the Disney Corporation for over $20 million, and used her experiencing in surviving breast cancer (twice) to write a children’s book on the subject.

Sophia Chiang – Qlubb

Qlubb is an online calendar tool that helps parent-led groups like PTAs or sports programs keep in touch and coordinate teams of volunteers. Sophia said she had the idea after she noticed a small group of parents always volunteering for activities at her children’s school. Many parents said they wanted to help but didn’t know how, which gave Sophia the idea for Qlubb. Now with 75,000 users, Qlubb continues to grow.

Cinnamon Bowser – Nail Taxi

Even the most innovative of moms needs a little pampering every now and then. But with kids, work, and a household, it can be difficult to get to a nail salon. Cinnamon solved that problem with her service, Nail Taxi. Nail Taxi is a service that brings the salon to you: at home, in the office, or wherever else you may need salon services.

These are some of our favorite mompreneurs, but we want to know who we left off the list. There are so many wonderful female innovators, it’s hard to choose the best. Let us know in the comments below who you would add!

Keep Your Children Safe – Alternate Uses for ZOMM Wireless Leash

As you probably already know, ZOMM is a Wireless Leash designed to keep you from forgetting your cell phone. It also serves as a Bluetooth speakerphone and personal safety device. However, outside of the marketed uses for ZOMM, many parents have told us they use the ZOMM to keep track of their children.

In light of this spring’s annual National Safe Kids Week, we wanted to share these alternate uses of our Wireless Leash. Keep reading to find out how ZOMM can keep your toddlers and teens safe…

keep kids safe

Toddlers
Though my kids are all grown up now, I can remember the days of having three little ones running three different directions. So it made perfect sense when I saw parents using ZOMMs on their toddlers.

Here’s how: Stick a ZOMM in your little one’s pocket, or attach the keychain to his belt loop, and if he happens to stray out of range, the ZOMM will begin to beep, letting you know your little tike has gotten away.

Teens
The uses for ZOMM are a bit more obvious for teens. Since many children are getting cell phones as teens (or even tweens), getting them a ZOMM will protect them twofold. First, it provides a layer of protection from losing the cell phone you (or they) bought. And second, it puts a panic alarm in their hand and 911 one-button push away. What parent wouldn’t feel comforted by that?

During National Safe Kids Week, we hope you’ll take the time to talk to your children about being safe—whether it’s walking to school, riding a bike or driving a car.

A Lot Can Happen in a Year! ZOMM 2010 Wrap-up

It’s hard to believe that 2010 has come and gone! It seems like just yesterday we were sitting around my dining room table putting the idea of ZOMM on paper. I can’t help but feel so blessed by everything that has happened for us and ZOMM this year.

ZOMM Wireless Leash

Let’s recap:

January – Consumer Electronics Best of Innovations Award
After unveiling the ZOMM Wireless Leash at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, ZOMM was named “Best of Innovations.” We were thrilled to be honored with this award which has been won by companies like Samsung, Panasonic and Nokia in the past.

February – Impressing the media

We continued to feel the love from CES in February. We generated about 100 million media impressions that resulted in being featured on the Today Show and Martha Stewart!

March – ZOMM Rolling off Assembly Line

In just under a year, ZOMM went from idea to reality. Needless to say, seeing the first ZOMM Wireless Leash roll off the assembly line was an incredible feeling for all of us.

April – New Headquarters Opens

By April we were settled into our new headquarters in Tulsa—complete with my homemade zebra print conference table!

May – New York City Press Tour
In May we took to the sky and traveled to New York City for a press tour. We met with editors and producers throughout the city in order to spread the word of ZOMM. Due to the press tour, we saw coverage in several national publications, including Forbes, Laptop and Good Housekeeping.

June – Official ZOMM Launch

In June we officially launched ZOMM! We fulfilled all pre-orders from CES and began selling ZOMM directly from our website and through retail.

August – Parachuting with the Army Golden Knights

We were excited to be the Titanium sponsor for Openca.mp in Dallas. What was even more exciting was seeing John Pozadzides make the first-ever phone call during a parachute descent…on a ZOMM!

September – ZOMM National Television Commercial
With Cali Lewis as our spokesperson, we blazed a new trail with our first National Television Commercial. Appearing on FoxNews, Biography and G4 Channels, it was another way to spread the word of ZOMM far and wide.

October – New Website
After lots of hard work and many tweaks, we rolled out the new design of our website. The new, sleek design shows off the features of ZOMM and incorporates video right onto the site! We also updated our online store, making it more user-friendly.

November – Firmware Upgrade
You talked and we listened. We took your feedback about ZOMM and made changes. Then we announced the free firmware upgrade and MyZOMM software. The upgrade included the option to turn the ZOMM ringer off as well as the ability to set the distance of the alarm.

December – Worldwide Expansion
Less than a year from our launch, ZOMM is going global. We know Americans aren’t the only people who lose their phones. So by expanding distribution to Europe, we hope to help our forgetful friends in other countries as well.

2010 has been a wild ride! We’re looking forward to 2011 as another opportunity to grow with new features, products and offices around the globe. Thank you to everyone who has played a part in our success this year! Here’s to a happy, healthy and prosperous 2011!

Latest ZOMM Happenings

As usual, things have been super busy in the ZOMM headquarters this fall.  We’ve been busy traveling to conferences like Opencamp and shows like CTIA’s Mobile Focus in order to spread the word about ZOMM.

That’s not all we’ve been doing to spread the word, though. Zac, the Z in ZOMM and our web designer, has been hard at work designing, updating and tweaking our website. Though every stage has looked great, we think the version up now is especially user-friendly. Check it out and let me know what you think!

Another way we’ve been spreading the word of ZOMM is through a national television commercial! The beautiful Cali Lewis serves as our spokesperson in the 30-second spot. Maybe you’ve seen it? It’s been running on FoxNews, Biography and G4 Channels. Make sure to let us know if you see it in your area! If you just can’t wait to see it on TV, visit our YouTube channel to see the commercial, and lots of other awesome ZOMM videos.

Have a great week everyone!

ZOMM = A Mother’s Peace of Mind

With my two girls being on their own this summer, I felt better knowing they had their ZOMMs. I knew that with a ZOMM in hand, they would drive safer by using the call notification and speakerphone feature. I knew they wouldn’t leave their phones behind during one of their many outings with the wireless leash feature. And I knew they would be protected by the panic alarm and emergency calling feature.

Knowing they had all of that protection from one small device made me feel so much more at ease.

I will admit, I cried when I had to leave them on their own, but it was definitely comforting to know they had their ZOMMs. My girls are headed off to college and I’m making sure their ZOMMs are packed with them for that adventure as well!

Want to pack a ZOMM with your son or daughter as they go off to college? Visit our website, www.ZOMM.com to get one!

One Crazy Year with ZOMM!

I am sitting in my office at the ZOMM Corporate Headquarters thinking how crazy the whole ZOMM experience has been. Can you believe it’s only been a year since I came up with the idea of ZOMM? In just one year, ZOMM has become a reality and made its way all over the world.  I’ve seen ZOMM covered in outlets ranging from CNN to the Wall Street Journal.  We’ve generated more than 200 million media impressions in only 9 months!

It’s both amazing and humbling to see people’s lives being changed by ZOMM.  It was especially exciting to see Best Buy select ZOMM for their safe driving campaign and even featured it in their weekend circular.  If any of you get a chance to see ZOMM on the store shelf at Best Buy, please take a picture of yourself with the display and send it to me. I’d love to add it to my scrapbook! (Yes, I scrapbook, but that’s a whole other blog in itself!)

New ZOMM Video! Preventing Mobile Phone Loss at Lunch

Hello everyone!

It’s been awhile since my last post, mostly due to the fact that we have been ridiculously busy since ZOMM launched in June. It seems like just yesterday we were sending out our first shipments!

We’ve also been very busy making new videos to share with you. All of our new videos will be featured on the ZOMM YouTube channel in the next few months. For now, though, I’m excited to show you the first one we launched, titled ZOMM –Preventing Mobile Phone Loss at Lunch:

The ZOMM Family—How Running Our Business is a Family Affair

Most families spend their evenings together gathered around the dining room table or television set, eating, talking and laughing. Conversations are usually light—“How was your day, honey?” or “What did you learn at school today, kids?”…

You won’t usually hear conversations about Bluetooth technology, a trip to the Consumer Electronics Showcase or when the next shipment from Hong Kong will arrive—that is, unless you’re at the Penix home.

We’re the Penixes , the founders and creators of ZOMM—the world’s first wireless leash for mobile phones.

I’m the ZOMM Mom, better known as Laurie Penix, wife to Henry and mother to Zachry, Olivia and Madison. A little over a year ago, a girlfriend called me complaining about how her husband lost his iPhone…AGAIN. I’d heard too many stories like hers, and I knew there had to be a way to prevent phone loss scenarios like what her husband had experienced.

I went to my husband, Henry Penix, to help me make my dream a reality. With the help of a team of Bluetooth technology rockstars, ZOMM was unveiled at CES 2010.

Being a mom, my kids are the most important thing in the world to me. So I named our new baby after my kids—Zachry, Olivia and Madison’s Mom—ZOMM.

Now I’m the Co-Founder and President of ZOMM and we’ve just released our wireless leash to market!

NYC Trip

Hello everyone!

We finally made it back to Tulsa and had a wonderful (long) weekend at the lake. It was the perfect way to rejuvenate as we get ready to officially launch ZOMM!

Our media tour last week in NYC was incredible. One of my favorite parts was our visit to the publication, Rolling Stone. Walking down the halls and seeing all the artwork and pictures was amazing! And to think of all the people who have been there and sat in the same chairs that we did was surreal. It was such a cool work environment. (See inside the meeting in the picture below) And visiting the “O Magazine” made me feel like I was sitting in Oprah’s living room!

Rolling Stone -- ZOMM -- NYC Press tour

This morning we had the privilege of being on Good Day Tulsa (a local news station). We had a great time! Everyone there seemed to love ZOMM. It’s great to have such wonderful responses from people in our home town. People keep saying that ZOMM is the perfect Father’s Day gift! And, we agree! =)

Today I just realized that in 15 days my girls will be leaving for Santa Monica, CA for the rest of the summer. Very sad but exciting since I will be driving them there. The 3 day road trip should be interesting!

Hope everyone is having a great week!

Just Landed in NYC!

We have just arrived in New York City and are so eager to begin the media tour. Our flight left at 4:00 a.m., so we are running on VERY little sleep. Good thing our adrenaline is keeping us awake!

We will be meeting with 14 different media outlets all in three days. We have an incredibly packed schedule but loving every second of it. It’s so thrilling to see ZOMM really starting to take off. Thanks again for all of the support!

Check back for updates on how the interviews are going!
