Keep Your Children Safe – Alternate Uses for ZOMM Wireless Leash

As you probably already know, ZOMM is a Wireless Leash designed to keep you from forgetting your cell phone. It also serves as a Bluetooth speakerphone and personal safety device. However, outside of the marketed uses for ZOMM, many parents have told us they use the ZOMM to keep track of their children.

In light of this spring’s annual National Safe Kids Week, we wanted to share these alternate uses of our Wireless Leash. Keep reading to find out how ZOMM can keep your toddlers and teens safe…

keep kids safe

Toddlers
Though my kids are all grown up now, I can remember the days of having three little ones running three different directions. So it made perfect sense when I saw parents using ZOMMs on their toddlers.

Here’s how: Stick a ZOMM in your little one’s pocket, or attach the keychain to his belt loop, and if he happens to stray out of range, the ZOMM will begin to beep, letting you know your little tike has gotten away.

Teens
The uses for ZOMM are a bit more obvious for teens. Since many children are getting cell phones as teens (or even tweens), getting them a ZOMM will protect them twofold. First, it provides a layer of protection from losing the cell phone you (or they) bought. And second, it puts a panic alarm in their hand and 911 one-button push away. What parent wouldn’t feel comforted by that?

During National Safe Kids Week, we hope you’ll take the time to talk to your children about being safe—whether it’s walking to school, riding a bike or driving a car.

Cell Phones Over the Decades

Today, cell phones are a normal part of everyday life. Believe it or not, though, it hasn’t always been that way. In fact, cell phones have only been around for about 30 years. Let’s take a look back at the evolution of man’s best friend…the cell phone:

The 80s
Motorola unveiled the first portable cell phone in 1983. The Brick, as it came to be known, was nearly 13 inches tall and weighed more than one pound, making it larger than some Chihuahuas. Since it was so large, it was not intended to be carried around, but rather, was made to be kept in the car. Hence why the term, “car phone” was popular.

The 90s
After the introduction in the 1980’s, the cell phone really exploded in the 90’s. The bulky phones shrank down to pocket-sized devices that people could take anywhere. Who hasn’t seen a Nokia “candy bar” phone or the original Motorola flip phone (with retractable antenna!)?

During the 90’s, cell phones became more and more common and many parents began buying them for their children as a means of keeping in touch.

The 2000s
Cell phones had always been cool, but when the new millennium rolled around, cell phones became smart. It started slowly, with the Nextel Push-to-Talk walkie-talkie type phone in 2003, followed by the Motorola Razr in 2004. The Blackberry came along in 2006, and with it came Internet at your fingertips… all day, every day. Then, in 2007, Steve Jobs unleashed the Apple iPhone and the rest, they say, is history.

The 2000s also brought cool features like text messaging, camera phones and Bluetooth connections, the latter of which enabled us to create our ZOMM Wireless Leash—because if one thing has remained the same through all of this, it’s that humans are forgetful.

What was your favorite decade of phones?

ZOMM Wireless Leash Journey – A Whirlwind of Excitement

The journey of the ZOMM Wireless Leash has been an exciting one. Last year was a whirlwind as we took our product from concept to market in under a year. Now, we’re excited to share that journey with you. This video takes a look inside the exciting ride ZOMM has been on over the past few years:

I get an email from my wife and she says there's a competition at the consumer electronics show in Las Vegas.

We submitted the materials and actually won.

This gave our product instant credibility and really validates who we are as a company.

The people behind the ZOMM took their idea for locating a lost cell phone and turned it into a CES success story, like no other.

Up to five hundred to start. The pink is sold out.

Also if a...

Can I have one of these?

...Yeah, sure, you can have whatever you want.

And it's...

Starts to vibrate.

Oh look, it's vibrating and blinking.

And then an alarm.

Bzzz, flash, screech — that’s your cell phone being left behind. Well, actually, that’s the new ZOMM Wireless Leash, a little round keychain-sized device that, when activated, uses Bluetooth technology to detect and sound an alert when you and your Bluetooth-enabled cellphone become separated by 20 to 40 feet. The Bluetooth connection also lets the ZOMM act as a speakerphone, so you can answer an out-of-reach phone with the press of a button. A built-in panic-button feature lets you initiate a piercing alarm, and auto dials 911. Alas, it can’t keep the phone battery going or boost reception. But stay tuned.

Zomm Wireless Leash is $79.99 at www.zomm.com; 888-821-0888

Are You Addicted to Your Cell Phone?

Like all forms of technology, cell phones have evolved rapidly over the past few decades. What began as a way to place calls to others while on the go has transformed into a mini computer that fits in the palm of our hand. Today, people are not only making calls, but they are texting, emailing, updating their stock portfolios and even starting their cars from their phones.

The question is: how much is too much? Take a look at the list below and then decide—Are you addicted to your cell phone?

cell phone addiction

You Have (and use) More Than 30 apps
The average smartphone user has 27 apps. Sure there are the basic “necessities” like Facebook, Twitter and Angry Birds, but somewhere you must draw the line. If you’re playing Farmville, listening to Pandora, growing your own rainforest and watching an episode of Grey’s Anatomy on Netflix, all at the same time…you might be addicted to your cell phone.

Your Phone Accessories Cost More Than Your Phone Itself
Everyone needs a car charger or an extra AC adapter to use while traveling. However, when you rack up everything from mirrored screen protectors and a Bluetooth headset to days-of-the-week cases and a handful of external chargers, it’s time to remember that this is a phone, not a pet or a child, and…you might be addicted to your cell phone.

You Cut Out Things Like Meals So You Can Afford Your Phone
Need we say much more? Living off of Ramen Noodles and applesauce so you can afford unlimited talk, text and web is simply not healthy. And if you’re doing that…you might be addicted to your cell phone.

You Cannot Go ANYWHERE Without It
Yes, having a cell phone with you is an extra level of safety and security. But, do you really need to backtrack 15 miles to get it for a trip to the grocery store? Are you one of those people who takes your phone with you to the little boys’ or girls’ room? While we do make a product (the ZOMM Wireless Leash) to help people like you to never be separated from your phone, we still think…you might be addicted to your cell phone.

So, what’s the consensus? Are you addicted to your cell phone? Hey, the first step is admitting you have a problem, so leave your confession in our comment section.

Stay Safe on Spring Break with ZOMM

spring-break-green-beach-sunglasses-photo

In between road tripping, flight scheduling and hotel booking, Spring Break safety can easily get lost in the excitement. Here at ZOMM we want your Spring Break to be filled with great memories–but we also want you to be safe! These quick tips to can help you stay protected (and your parents a bit less worried) during your days off:

  • Know where you are. Figure out basic information before you travel, so you can relax while on vacation. Make sure you know the address of your hotel and leave that information with family or friends back home. Program your hotel’s phone number, a reliable cab service and the local emergency number into your phone as well. That way, in case something unfortunate should happen, you’ll be prepared.
  • Keep your cell phone with you at all times. Remember when your parents bought you your first cell phone to use only in the case of an emergency? Well the same still applies. Keep your phone charged and with you at all times, in case you need to contact someone. It also never hurts to have an extra layer of protection with our Wireless Leash.
  • Have a plan. Make a simple schedule every morning and exchange it with your friends. That way, if you don’t show up for dinner, they will know to contact you.
  • Use the Buddy System. You learned it in Kindergarten, and it still applies today. If you are on Spring Break with a group of friends, you don’t have to stay with the group the entire time. However, you should always be with at least one other person – never travel alone.
  • Drink water. Staying hydrated keeps you energized and focused—two important necessities for staying safe (and making good decisions).
  • Use a personal safety device. While we truly hope it isn’t needed during your Spring Break, the personal safety aspect of ZOMM includes a panic alarm and emergency call feature, so you can scare off perpetrators and call 911 with the touch of a button.

Just remember: whether you’re lying on the beach, skiing the slopes or staying local, it’s always important to think of safety first. From the ZOMM team, have a fun (and safe!) Spring Break!

Have any additional spring break safety tips? We’d love to hear how you plan to stay safe on Spring Break!
