Remember When? A Look Back at the First iPhone Announcement

The date? January 9, 2007. The occasion? The much-anticipated announcement of the very first iPhone. It was on that day nearly five years ago that Steve Jobs officially introduced the first-ever iPhone to the world. In light of the awaited iPhone 5 (as it’s been dubbed) announcement tomorrow, we thought we’d take a look back at the first iPhone.

iphone original announcement

The world first heard mention of Apple’s phone in December of 2004. Three years later, in January 2007, Jobs held a press conference to debut his device. After its unveiling, people only had to wait six months to get their hands on one.

After those six months, anxious customers waited in line to be the first to own the revolutionary device. Take a look at this news story from Chicago:

The specs of the first iPhone? For that we turn to Engadget:

“Sweet, glorious specs of the 11.6 millimeter device (that’s frickin’ thin, by the way) include a 3.5-inch 480 x 320 touchscreen display with multi-touch support and a proximity sensor to turn off the screen when it’s close to your face, 2 megapixel cam, 4GB or 8 GB of storage, Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR and A2DP, WiFi that automatically engages when in range, and quad-band GSM radio with EDGE. Perhaps most amazingly, though, it somehow runs OS X with support for Widgets, Google Maps, and Safari, and iTunes (of course) with CoverFlow out of the gate. A partnership with Yahoo will allow all iPhone customers to hook up with free push IMAP email. Apple quotes 5 hours of battery life for talk or video, with a full 16 hours in music mode — no word on standby time yet.”

The original iPhone blew us all away—yet somehow we believe that Apple will be able to do it again, four versions later.

Did you own the first iPhone? Have you upgraded to each iPhone since then?

iPhone 5 Rumor Round-Up

iphone 5 rumors

In June, we admitted that we are a little partial towards the iPhone, even though our Wireless Leash works with any Bluetooth-enabled phone. We also gave you some of the latest rumors surrounding the much-anticipated Apple developments. In the two months since, the rumors have gotten even crazier, and we’re excited to share them!

The iPhone 5 will no longer have a home button.
When the iPad came out, word was that Steve Jobs didn’t want any buttons on it, but eventually allowed it. Now, the rumors say he got his way. According to the Metro and their leaked photos, there will not be a home button on the iPhone 5.

iOS5 will offer a text-to-speech function.
Presumably, iOS5 will be available at the same time as the iPhone 5. While there are many confirmed features, the text-to-speech function is one that is being tested, but isn’t confirmed for the new OS. According to 9to5mac, the Nuance text-to-speech function is being tested in SMS only for now, with hopes to integrate throughout the OS in the future.

The iPhone 5 will have a 4 inch display.
According to renderings based on a third party accessory retailer, the next iPhone will have a 4 inch display. It will also be thinner than previous iPhone models. 9to5mac even offers images of the iPhone 4 sitting in an iPhone 5 case for comparison purposes.

With a rumored release date of mid-October, there’s still plenty of time for rumors to pop up before the product is officially announced. We’re curious to know—what have you heard lately about the next iPhone?

Apple iPhone Rumor Round-up

Our Wireless Leash works with any Bluetooth-capable phone. So we’re obviously open to any and all cell phones. However, that doesn’t mean we don’t have a favorite. Like millions of other Americans, most of us here at ZOMM just love our iPhones.

Since Steve Jobs’ announcement of the iPhone 5, likely coming this September, rumors have been flying—and not just about the iPhone 5. Today we have a quick round-up of the latest Apple iPhone rumors:

Apple Releasing 2 New Phones in September
The International Business Times reported that Apple plans to release both the iPhone 5 and an update to the iPhone 4, called the iPhone 4S, this fall. According to analyst Chris Whitmore, the iPhone 5 will be loaded with new features, while the 4S will be a cheaper version of the current iPhone.

Apple Offering Free iPhone 3GS with Contract
The new iPhone release this fall will be the second since the iPhone 3GS, making it almost pre-historic (ha!). However, according to MacRumors.com, Apple will continue to produce the 3GS, and offer it for free with the start of a new contract with AT&T.

Apple’s iPhone 5 Loaded with New Features
Some of the features thought to be included in the new iPhone are: 4G connectivity, edge-to-edge display, glasses-free 3D capabilities, and a bigger, faster camera. More details about these possible (and incredible!) upgrades are all across the web.

5 Little-Known iPhone Tricks

On Tuesday, Steve Jobs held one of his famous press conferences to announce the latest and greatest coming from Apple this year. While iCloud is really, really awesome and iOS 5 sounds cool, we have to wait for them to come to market.

In light of that, we decided to point out a few of the cool things you don’t have to wait for! You probably also didn’t realize you could do all of these things on your iPhone. Below is a list of the top 5 “hidden gems” of an iPhone, if you will.

  1. Take a Screenshot
Quickly press and release the home button and sleep button simultaneously to take a screenshot of your current screen. The image will be saved in your camera roll for you to access at any time.
  2. Auto-Scroll to the Top of a Page
In any app (MMS, Safari, Contacts, etc) touch the top data bar (where the time, battery and signal is displayed) to automatically scroll to the top of the screen.

  3. Type Alternate Characters
To add an accent mark, or other punctuation, to a letter, simply press and hold that letter. A display with all of your options will appear on the screen. Touch the letter you want and voilà!

  4. Add Emoticons to Texts, Notes and Emails
This one does require an app download; however, it’s totally worth it. Download the Emoji app (for free). The go to Settings > General > International > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard and add the Emoji keyboard. Now you can send over 460 emoticons to your other iPhone-using friends!

  5. Quickly Insert Punctuation
Easily insert a period by double tapping the spacebar at the end of a sentence. You can also press the “123” button, then without lifting your finger, slide to the punctuation you want to add. When you release, the punctuation will be added, followed by a space and the keyboard will switch back to alpha.

With all these cool features, you better make sure you never lose that iPhone!

Top iPhone Apps of 2010

On January 26, 2009, Apple first used the phrase, “There’s an app for that.” It quickly took off and has become a part of pop culture. In fact, the phrase is so popular that Apple has acquired the trademark for the phrase.

The best part about the phrase “There’s an app for that”? It’s the truth—there really is an app for almost anything. From finding where your car is parked to directions for how to cook a turkey and even an app called “Fat Booth”—there are more apps in the Apple store than one person could possibly handle. The number of apps is so incredible that it can be hard to decide which ones to buy or use.

We did a little research and found a great article from TechCrunch, detailing the top iPhone apps of 2010. Check out their findings:

Top 5 Paid iPhone Apps

  1. Angry Birds
  2. Doodle Jump
  3. Skee-Ball
  4. Bejewled 2 + Blitz
  5. Fruit Ninja

Top 5 Free iPhone Apps

  1. Facebook
  2. Angry Birds Lite
  3. Words with Friends Free
  4. Skype
  5. Tap Tap Revenge 3

Top 5 Grossing iPhone Apps

  1. MLB.com At Bat 2010
  2. Angry Birds
  3. Call of Duty: Zombies
  4. Bejeweled 2 + Blitz
  5. FriendCaller 3 Pro

It’s pretty wild to think that Angry Birds, which costs $0.99, is the second highest-grossing app to MLB.com At Bat, which costs $15!

If you’re dishing out dough for these apps, then you probably don’t want to lose your iPhone (link: http://zomm.com/blog/tag/iphone/) (and your progress on Angry Birds). And we happen to know just the device to help you with that…

Apple iOS versus Android – Which Operating System is on Top?

In 2005, when Steve Jobs released the iPhone, people were blown-away by the innovativeness of the device. Every electronic device we ever wanted was packed into one small, black, touch-screen phone…

…Or so we thought.

Today, the iPhone is on its fourth generation, and it just keeps getting better with age. However, many other smartphones have entered the market. The most notable being the Android.

Yesterday, Nielsen released a report stating that Android had tied the Apple iOS for the title of “Most Desired Operating System.”  Here are some of Nielsen’s findings:

  • 35 % of users who already had a smartphone and were planning to get a new device leaned towards an Apple iPhone
  • 28% of both smartphone and featurephone users planning to upgrade indicated they wanted an Android
  • Women planning to get a smartphone are more likely to want an iPhone, whereas men prefer Android devices

So what is it exactly that Droid does (pun intended) that has inspired this rapid growth in popularity?

While we can’t give you an answer to that question, we can promise you that regardless of which smartphone you choose, ZOMM will be there to help.

Are you an Apple or an Android? Why? Let us know by leaving a comment below!

iPhone 4 + ZOMM — Syncing Multiple Bluetooth Devices — Video

Hey iPhone 4 users! You spent a lot of money on that brand new, state-of-the-art smartphone—so you better not lose it. What better way to prevent losing your phone than with ZOMM, the world’s first wireless leash for mobile phones?

With the new operating system in the iPhone 4, you can sync multiple Bluetooth devices to your phone at the same time. ZOMM CEO, Henry Penix, shows you how  in this video:

So we've just got the new iPhone in at ZOMM headquarters and we've realized now that we can actually pair two blue tooth devices to the one phone.

So, I'll just go through this exercise real quick.

We already have one phone paired.
I am gonna go to the general settings bluetooth.

You 'll see Andy's ZOMM is already paired so I'm going to go ahead and pair another ZOMM.

Okay , there's a second chirp, there it is, Z and ZOMM.
Press that button. Wait for it to pair.

It 's searching.

And it's connected.

So as you can see we you have two ZOMMs connected right now.

Now, I'm going to get a telephone call, and you can see how we talk with both ZOMMs.

I 'll talk with one at one point in time and then I'll switch over to the other. This will also work work in your car. So, if you have a bluetooth device in your car and you're operating a ZOMM, you don't have to disconnect one of the other, they will both work at the same time.

Here I'm getting a telephone call. This one's ringing, so I go ahead and answer that one.

Hello.

Hey, how are ya?

Good, good, good.
OK, so I am talking on this one and I'm gonna go ahead look at blue tooth, I'm gonna press this one and it automatically switches. How you doing?

Hey, I'm Still here.

OK, great, great, great. So we're operating two ZOMMs on the new iPhone 4 at the same time.

Now, this can either be two ZOMM's or it can also be a ZOMM and any other Blue tooth device. This will also work on previous generation iPhone as long as you have the new 4.0 software downloaded.

So, here we go, iPhone and ZOMM, not just smart but alarmingly smart.

Apple iPhone users: Who are they?

In light of the new iPhone coming out next weekend, here at ZOMM we’ve been doing a little thinking. Since the Apple iPhone was first introduced in 2007, it has become a pop-culture phenomenon. These days you see everyone from high-power business executives to movie stars and even soccer moms (and grandmas) checking e-mail, surfing the web and in general, being completely engrossed in their iPhones.

So, what do we know about iPhone users? The Nielson Company conducted several surveys to answer that very question.

  1. In general, the number of smartphone users is increasing.According to Nielson’s research, 23% of mobile consumers now have a smartphone, up from just 16% last year. While this statistic may not tell us who iPhone users are, it does tell us that there are a lot of them out there.
  2. iPhone users run the age gamut.Only 47% of iPhone users are under the age of 34. This means that the older generations are taking to the Apple Smartphone more so than the young, 20-something crowd. However, the male-female split is right at 50/50.
  3. iPhone users are loyal and happy consumers.80% of Apple iPhone users want their next device to be an iPhone as well. A majority of them would recommend it (like an iPhone 3GS) to their friends.
  4. iPhone users love to watch videos.Bringing the power of video to our fingertips—and on our mobile phones—is a huge accomplishment for Apple. And apparently, it was the right decision. 37% of iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS users watch video on their phone. (Speaking of, why not watch a few videos right now?)
  5. Okay, iPhone users just love to use their iPhones.98% of iPhone users utilize the data features of their phone, 88% surf the Internet and 75% download the all-too-well known iPhone apps (heck there’s probably an app for finding out these very statistics).

Now, we didn’t find statistics about how many of these iPhone-loving folks have ever left their precious phones behind (or lost them completely) but we’re sure it’s happened. So as you head out to buy your first iPhone or upgrade to the iPhone 4, you should probably make a stop at the ZOMM online store an item on your to-do list.

Because if you don’t want to lose it, you better put a (wireless) leash on it.
