5 Pop Culturally-Relevant Phones

Telephones: everyone uses them. Doctors, lawyers, moms and even pop culture icons need to make phone calls. While we favor cell phones over landlines, many of these incredibly awesome (and pop culturally-significant) phones had curly cords.

Today we bring you a fun list of 5 of the most pop culturally-significant phones.

Juno’s Hamburger Phone

Juno famously tells the person on the other end “Can you hold on for a second? I’m on my hamburger phone. It’s just like really awkward to talk on.” We still want to know if she got fries with that phone.

The Jersey Shore Mallard Duck Phone

Regardless of how you feel about the show, it’s definitely a pop culture sensation. One of the strangest parts of the show is not the incessant partying or fist-pumping, but the phone shaped like a Mallard Duck. Why? The better question is “Why not?”

Clarissa Explains it All’s Anatomy Phone

pop culture phone

Clarissa Darling was a 90s teen that 90s teen girls wanted to be BFFs with. As her pre-adolescent concerns (boys, pimples, annoying siblings) played out onscreen, she made regular phone calls on her super cool anatomy phone.

Zack Morris’ Brick Phone

pop culture phone

We mentioned Zack’s brick phone in our story about phones in entertainment. However, this beast of a phone is truly a pop culture icon. It’s so popular it even has its own YouTube video.

The Flinstones Dino Phone

pop culture phone

You might think your iPhone 3GS is a dinosaur phone due to the release of the iPhone 4S, but you’ve got nothing on the Flinstones. However, they were way ahead of their time when it came to telecommunications.

What pop culture phones will we be writing about ten years from now? Perhaps these will still be on the list, or maybe some wilder, wackier and more outrageous phones will have infiltrated pop culture. We can’t wait to find out.

What other phones would you add to this list?

How the Millennial Generation Uses Mobile

The Millennial generation is a mobile one, that’s not surprise. Users in that bracket—ages 18 to 34—tend to own multiple Internet-connected devices and a majority of them (62%) are smartphone users. Check out other statistics on this Millennial’s mobile make-up:

How Texting is Changing the World

Text messaging is one of the most-used forms of communication today. If you don’t believe it, check out this infographic which boasts that 3 out of 5 humans on Earth are texters. That is more than the entire population of the world just 36 years ago, in 1975!

Cell Phones: the Weird and the Wacky

From the World’s Largest Cell Phone to the Zack Morris Phone and even a gold-plated iPhone, here on our blog we’ve shared some off-the-wall phones with you. However, today we might just have the wildest and wackiest phones yet.

Check out these three bizarre phones from around the world—you just might change your mind about waiting in line for the iPhone 5!

weird phone

A Porsche branded cell phone. The ultimate in speed dialing luxury? We’re not sure, but we can say that this phone is definitely not something you see every day. In 2007, the Porsche cell phone was sold in Hong Kong for $164.

weird phone

From a company called HiPhone comes this iPod Nano look-a-like. While it appears to have a rotary style dial, it actually requires that you press the buttons (unlike the actual Nano). These were popular in China in 2009, so who knows what they’re disguising phones as today.

weird phone

This cell phone has a bonus feature… a stun gun. Yep, press a button and stun away. The stun gun cell phone also includes a flashlight and operates on battery power. As of 2009, the stun gun cell phone retailed for $79.95, but we’re assuming you won’t be able to find a similar model now… This is certainly one approach to safety, but for a better approach, we suggest a Wireless Leash!

These are just a few of the weird and wacky cell phones out there available to purchase, but we want to see some of the more recent models.

Leave us a comment below telling us about the weirdest cell phone you’ve seen (or heard about) lately!

Cell Phone Addiction: How Serious is it?

In 2006, Jon Markman wrote an article for CNN that started out like this:

“When you get in your car, you reach for it. When you’re at work, you take a break to have a moment alone with it. When you get into an elevator, you fondle it.

Cigarettes? Cup of coffee? Nope, it’s the third most addictive substance in modern life, the cell phone. And experts say it is becoming more difficult for many people to curb their longing to hug it more tightly than most of their personal relationships.

With its shiny surfaces, its sleek and satisfying touch, its mysteries and air of sophistication, the cell phone connects us to the world even as it disconnects us from people three feet away…”

And to think, this article was written before the iPhone was released. Cell phones—and particularly smartphones—have come a long, long way since 2006. Along with that, do you think the addiction has worsened?

We love to hear your thoughts on this. Leave a comment below with your answers to these questions:

Are you addicted to your cell phone? Do you think addiction to cell phones (in general) has worsened over the past five years?

Mobile Phones – USA’s Biggest Time Consumer?

Do you really realize how much time you spend on your mobile phone? Probably not. Most of us have become so accustomed to using our phones that, at the end of the day, we don’t even realize just how many minutes (or hours) we’ve spent absorbing mobile information.

In 2009, online media was the primary time-absorber for US consumers, at a little over 4 hours a day. (Not surprising) In comparison, consumers said they used their mobile phones for just over an hour each day.

The big news here is that during 2009, every form of media consumption DECREASED, except for mobile phones.  Mobile phone use actually increased by 39%. That means you are turning off the TV, putting away your laptop, unplugging the radio…and playing with your mobile phones. (Stats courtesy of E-marketer.com)

3 cell phones

So you use your phone a LOT.  We’ve already established you’d rather be using your phone than watching TV, listening to the radio or browsing the Internet. So where would you be if you lost your phone?
