Cell Phones and Driving: Know the Laws

Talking on a cell phone while driving: One of the hottest topics in state and local legislatures across the country. Do you know the laws in your state? Thanks to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, we’ve compiled a list of info to help you educate yourself:

As of January 2011, 9 states have completely banned the use of hand-held cell phones while driving:

  • California
  • Connecticut
  • Delaware
  • Maryland
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Oregon
  • Utah
  • Washington

cell phone laws

Local laws (not state-wide) have been implemented in several localities, including:

  • Oahu, Hawaii
  • Chicago, Illinois
  • Brookline, Massachusetts
  • Detroit, Michigan
  • Santa Fe, New Mexico
  • Waupaca County, Wisconsin
  • Cheyenne, Wyoming

Other cell phone and driving related laws include:

  • 28 states have restricted the use of cell phones by novice drivers
  • 30 states have banned text messaging for all drivers
  • 8 states have banned text messaging for novice drivers

While many states have restricted the use of hand-held cell phones and devices, several still allow for the use of hands-free devices. ZOMM’s hands-free car kit and built-in speakerphone is one of many options available for a safer driving experience.

ZOMM Wireless Leash Featured in Global Technology Store

Do you know which technology company resides at 1 Infinite Loop in Cupertino, California?

If you guessed Apple, then you’re exactly right!

ZOMM at Apple HQ

Inside the HQ of Apple, there’s a little place called the “Apple Company Store” (Also known as the “Mothership”). Though it was originally the Apple Employee store, it is now open to the public.

Why are we telling you this? Because this past weekend, a friend of ZOMM spotted our Wireless Leash on the shelves in the Apple Company Store! Even though ZOMM is compatible with all smartphones—and any phone with Bluetooth capability—it’s great to see it positioned with the iPhone!

We’re honored (and feel a little bit cooler) to know that we’re on shelves of one of the biggest global technology companies in the world. Below are a few photos:

The key chain-sized fob will flash, vibrate and even sound an alarm if you start to walk away from it.

ZOMM also acts as a speakerphone, so you can answer calls through ZOMM when the phone is out of site or while you’re driving. WIRELESS ALARM

Are you sure you have your mobile phone with you each morning as you’re rushing out the door to go to work? Attach ZOMM, LLC’s alarm to your key ring and, assuming you haven’t also forgotten your keys, the device—four centimeters in diameter—will start to flash and vibrate when it gets more than nine meters from your phone. (The two communicate wirelessly via Bluetooth.) Because of this Bluetooth connection, the ZOMM device can also act as a speakerphone with built-in noise cancellation, enabling you to answer your phone even when it’s out of reach. A panic button feature lets you sound a 40-decibel alarm and call for local emergency assistance.

ZOMM on Nickelodeon’s ParentsConnect

about ZOMM – Online:

“Where is my phone?”

If you – or your kids – find yourself asking this question several times a day, you could benefit from getting to know ZOMM. It’s a wireless “leash” that hangs from your keychain and is Bluetooth-enabled to vibrate, flash, and sound an alarm every time users walk too far away from their phone.

We liked the concept from the get-go, and found it easy to set up and activate. But what made us fall in love with ZOMM is that it can be set up to be an answerable speakerphone device because, let’s face it, just because we know our phone is in our purse doesn’t mean we can get to it at the moment the ringtone starts sounding. Another huge safety plus – it can sound a panic alarm, and by continuing to hold down the ZOMM multifunction button through the alarm, it can call local emergency assistance. Just. Like. That.

If you’re wondering if a mother was mother of this incredible invention, the answer is yes. ZOMM stands for Zac, Olivia, and Madison’s Mom.

Giving Thanks – ZOMM Celebrates Thanksgiving

Even though we should really do it every day, each year the 4th Thursday in November is recognized as THE day to give thanks. Everyone has different things to be thankful for, whether it’s healthy family and friends, a steady job or prevailing over disaster.

Here at ZOMM, we’re thankful for many, many things, but here are a few highlights:

Bluetooth Technology
Without Bluetooth, ZOMM wouldn’t be possible. We’ve praised Bluetooth before, and we’ll continue to do so! These short wavelength radio waves have allowed us to create a one-of-a-kind product that solves a problem nearly everyone has dealt with at some point.

That brings us to another thing we are thankful for…

Forgetful People (AKA our customers)
If people weren’t so busy (and at times, forgetful) there would be no need for ZOMM. However, in the hustle and bustle of today’s society, people are often guilty of leaving their phones at home, in cabs, at a restaurant, or any one of thousands of other places. We’re thankful for these people because they’re the ones who have purchased ZOMMs and without paying customers, well…we’d be in real trouble. So, thank you!

And one more thing we’re thankful to have…

Our Fabulous Employees
We have an amazing team of talented, intelligent and fun people who have helped us make ZOMM a success. From our technology team in Seattle to our outside sales representatives and distributors to all of those in our Tulsa Headquarters, we are truly blessed to have such a great team.

This is just a snapshot of what we’re thankful for—everyday brings new blessings.

What are you thankful for this year? Share your thanksgiving blessings with us by leaving a comment below.

So while Santa is making his list and checking it twice, make sure you’re making a list, too.
