Mompreneurs: Our Generation’s Superwoman

Here at ZOMM we are proud to say that our product—the first wireless leash for mobile phones—is the brainchild of a mom. Our ZOMM Mom, Laurie Penix, is the Co-Founder and President of our company. Laurie’s a hard-working entrepreneur, and an even harder-working mom. Because of this, you’ve probably seen (or heard) us refer to her as a “mompreneur.”

So just what is a Mompreneur?

Since the newly-coined word isn’t in the dictionary (yet), we turned to the online Urban Dictionary to find a definition. They define “mompreneur”as:

“An entrepreneur who also happens to be a mother. Some may prefer to transpose the professional and personal roles to read a mother who happens to be an entrepreneur.

According to the latest research done by Entrepreneur magazine, there are 10.6 million women-owned businesses in the United States, and these businesses are generating $2.5 trillion in revenue each year. The same study showed that women are opening businesses at twice the rate of men. The numbers are quite impressive…

However, is anyone really surprised?

Moms are multi-taskers. And moms know everything. (Didn’t yours?) For years moms have been juggling multiple responsibilities and basically being superwomen. Whether it’s finding lost socks, cooking a 5-course meal or coaxing a stubborn child into swimming lessons, moms make it look easy. So it doesn’t surprise us that they are so successful as entrepreneurs…er, mompreneurs.

Being a successful mompreneur requires a delicate balance between work and family time. Many moms choose to work out of their homes so they can be close to their children. Others create family-friendly office environments. This is a bit easier for our ZOMM Mom since her children are all in college. (Laurie’s oldest, Zac, works as the IT director for ZOMM.)

However, it’s still something every working mom must think about.

As usual, though, moms across the nation are handling the balance gracefully. You can learn about their successes by checking out some of these popular blogs and groups dedicated to (and made by) mompreneurs:
